WEEK 36.2- (SEPT 5 – SEPT 12) The Vessel and the Light Within
Mantra “Storms pass. My spirit endures.”
Welcome. Tonight we remember: you are not just the body you live in. The body is like a vessel, a beautiful boat carrying you across the vast ocean of life. It deserves care, nourishment, and rest, but it is not the whole of you. Within the vessel is something more precious: the inner light, the wisdom that guides your way.
When we forget this, we confuse the boat with the journey. When we remember, we find freedom. Tonight, we practice not only to strengthen the body, but to awaken the light that steers us from within.
Topic 1 – The Vessel
Reflection: The body is sacred, but it is not the essence of you. It is the home, the temple, the vessel through which your spirit shines. Just as water hydrates the body but does not become you, your vessel carries you, but it is not your true identity. When you look in the mirror, do you only see the vessel, or do you notice the light that steers it?
Metaphor: A musician cherishes her instrument, tuning it with care. But she knows she is not the instrument — she is the music that flows through it.
Quotes:
“Time was when I despised the body; But then I saw the God within and the body, I realized, is the Lord’s temple.” – Tirumoolar
“Your body is listening to everything your mind is saying.”
“The body is a guesthouse; tend it well, but remember you are the host.”
“Life only demands from you the strength you already possess.”
Topic 2 – The Inner Guide
Reflection: Within you is an inner guide, a quiet wisdom that gently steers you forward. The storms of life may shake your vessel, but your spirit decides how you respond. On the mat, the body may tremble or tire, yet the breath reminds you of your resilience and steadiness.
Metaphor: Imagine a lantern glowing inside you. No matter how dark the night outside, the light within continues to shine, illuminating each next step.
Quotes:
“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.” – Lao Tzu
“A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking. Her trust is not in the branch, but in her own wings.”
“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” – Ram Dass
“You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress at the same time.”
Topic 3 – The Journey
Reflection: The vessel and the inner guide together make the journey possible. The waves are not the enemy; they are the teachers. The storms are not punishment; they are practice. What matters is not the condition of the waters, but the strength and clarity of the light that shines within you.
Metaphor: A candle does not fight the darkness. It simply shines, and in doing so, the path becomes visible.
Quotes:
“As gold purified in a furnace loses its impurities, the mind gets rid of delusion through meditation and attains reality.” – Adi Shankara
“Ego says, ‘Once everything falls into place, I’ll feel peace.’ Spirit says, ‘Find your peace, and then everything will fall into place.’” – Marianne Williamson
“The man who removes a mountain begins by removing small stones.” – Chinese Proverb
“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
Topic 4 – Weathering the Storms
Reflection: Life offers both calm seas and stormy waters. When the seas are calm, savor them fully, for they are precious and fleeting. When the seas are fierce and roaring, steady yourself, trim your sails, and ride it out with patience — for storms, too, are temporary. The strength of the vessel matters, but even more, the steadiness of the spirit. Challenges are not proof that you are lost; they are invitations to grow courage, deepen trust, and discover your resilience.
Metaphor: A tree that bends in strong winds survives the storm. Rigidity breaks, but resilience carries us through.
Quotes:
“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” – Lao Tzu
“The human spirit is stronger than anything that can happen to it.” – George C. Scott
“Just because someone carries it well does not mean it is not heavy.” – Jimmy Buffet
“The sky has no limits, and neither should your hopes and dreams.” – David Scott
Topic 5 – Arrival (Florence Chadwick’s Story)
Reflection: The purpose of the journey is not to escape the storms, but to discover who we are within them. Arrival is not always about reaching the shore; it is about trusting the light within to guide us, even when we cannot see the way.
Story: In 1952, swimmer Florence Chadwick set out to swim from Catalina Island to the California coast. After 15 hours in the icy waters, a thick fog rolled in. Exhausted and unable to see the shore, she gave up — only to learn she was less than a mile away. Two months later, she tried again. The same fog returned, but this time she kept in her mind’s eye the image of the shoreline. Though she still could not see it, she trusted it was there. And she made it.
Metaphor: Sometimes we can’t see the destination, but if we hold the vision inside, the unseen shore is closer than we think.
Quotes:
“Never remain a prisoner of your past. It was a lesson, not a life sentence.”
“Touch your inner space, as silent and empty as the sky; it is your inner sky. Once you settle down in your inner sky, you have come home.” – Osho
“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” – Mahatma Gandhi
“Have enough courage to trust love one more time and always one more time.” – Maya Angelou
Closing Reflection
As we settle into stillness tonight, remember: your body is the vessel, your spirit the light, your journey the sea. The waves will rise and fall, the waters will shift, but the lantern within you never goes out. Trust it, nurture it, and let it guide you home.
