WEEK 39.1 (SEPT 27-OCT 3) CLIMB YOUR MOUNTAIN, SO YOU CAN SEE THE WORLD BETTER, NOT SO OTHERS CAN SEE YOU
Climb Your Mountain, So You Can See the World Better, Not So Others Can See You
Mantra: “I conquer not the mountain, but myself.”
“I climb not to be seen, but to see.”
Opening
Welcome. Tonight, we reflect on the mountains within us. Not the peaks of stone and snow, but the ones made of doubt, fear, and limitation. Every step on the mat, every breath, is a step upward. We don’t climb to prove ourselves to others. We climb to see more clearly, to rise above the clouds of confusion, and to discover the view of freedom that was waiting all along.
Topic 1 – The First Step Upward
Metaphor: Imagine standing at the base of a mountain. From below, the peak looks overwhelming. But the mountain isn’t climbed in a single leap. It’s walked step by step.
Reflection: In yoga and in life, progress isn’t about giant leaps but about steady, mindful steps. The Buddha taught that “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Tonight, ask yourself: What is my next step toward peace?
Quotes:
“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” – Edmund Hillary
“Most obstacles melt away when we make up our minds to walk boldly through them.” – Orison Swett Marden
“When things change inside you, things change around you.” – Unknown
“The way to climb the mountain is to begin.” – David Scott
Topic 2 – The Light Within
Metaphor: Imagine an old lantern in an attic, dim beneath layers of dust. At first glance, it looks dull and forgotten. But the flame inside is never truly gone. As long as the lantern still holds oil, symbolizing our inner hope, it can be relit. With a little care, polishing away the dust and striking the spark, the lantern glows again, casting warmth and light all around.
Reflection: Your inner light is always there, waiting to shine. Self-love isn’t about creating something new, it’s about uncovering what was always present and keeping your hope alive. When you honor yourself, you radiate without effort, and that glow naturally brightens the path for others.
Quotes:
“You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.” – Buddha
“What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Emerson
“Nothing can dim the light that shines from within.” – Maya Angelou
“Your task is not to seek for love, but to remove the barriers against it.” – Rumi
Topic 3 – Self-Acceptance
Metaphor: If you ever visit Greece, you’ll see mosaics adorning floors and walls, crafted from countless broken pieces of glass and tile. Alone, each shard looks jagged and incomplete. But when placed together, they form breathtaking designs that shine with more beauty than a single flawless stone ever could.
Reflection: We are mosaics. Our cracks, struggles, and mistakes are not flaws to hide but colors and shapes that make us unique. Self-acceptance means seeing yourself as whole, not seamless. When you embrace all your pieces, you uncover a beauty that perfection could never create.
Quotes:
“The wound is the place where the light enters you.” – Rumi
“Let go of who you think you’re supposed to be, embrace who you are.” – Brené Brown
“To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.” – Thích Nhất Hạnh
“Sometimes the broken places are where the light comes through most clearly.” – Unknown
Topic 4 – Resilience in the Climb
Metaphor: Imagine a sailor in the middle of a fierce storm at sea. The waves are towering, the sky is dark, and the small boat is tossed in every direction. If the sailor has no destination, the storm feels unbearable, endless. But if the sailor holds a clear chart and knows where the harbor lies, every hardship becomes part of the journey home.
Reflection: Resilience doesn’t come from avoiding hardship, but from remembering why you endure it. Nietzsche wrote, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” When your purpose is clear, whether love, faith, or a dream you hold close, the struggles you face become waves you ride, not walls that stop you. Tonight, ask yourself: What is my “why”?
Quotes:
“He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” – Nietzsche
“You learn how resilient you are the moment retreat becomes impossible.” – David Scott
“Fall seven times and stand up eight.” – Japanese Proverb
“In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein
Topic 5 – Gratitude as a Viewpoint
Metaphor: Imagine standing at the end of harvest season in a vineyard. Grapes are gathered in bunches, not one at a time. Each tiny grape may seem small and fragile, but together they create abundance. And the best wines come when those bunches are picked with care, selecting the ripe clusters to bring in. Gratitude works the same way. Single moments of thankfulness may feel small, but when gathered together, they create richness that can sustain and nourish us through any season.
Reflection: Gratitude isn’t about waiting for something grand. It’s about noticing the clusters of blessings that already hang heavy on the vine of your life, and gathering them with care. When you do, you discover your life is already full, already sweet, already overflowing with more than enough.
Quotes:
“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough.” – Melody Beattie
“It is not the man who has too little, but the man who craves more, that is poor.” – Seneca
“A grateful heart is a magnet for miracles.” – Unknown
“Wealth consists not in having great possessions, but in having few wants.” – Epictetus
Topic 6 – The Summit’s Perspective
Metaphor: At the peak, the mountain doesn’t look down to be admired. It simply stands, offering a wider view of the world.
Reflection: True growth is not for display but for vision. When we climb our inner mountains, we see more clearly, not so the world can see us, but so we can better see the world. In the end, it is not the mountain we conquer but our fears and doubts. The summit is not proof of our strength over stone, but proof of our strength over self.
Quotes:
“Climb your mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you better.” – David Scott
“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” – Edmund Hillary
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” – Wayne Dyer
“Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
Bonus Reflection – Growth and Environment
Metaphor: A fish can only grow as large as the body of water it lives in. In a small bowl, even the strongest fish remains small. But in the wide ocean, it can grow without limit. Our lives are the same. If we choose only hills of comfort, we stay small. If we place ourselves before true mountains, we grow into our strength.
Reflection: Real growth comes not from avoiding challenge, but from choosing challenges worthy of who we are becoming. Tonight, ask: Am I swimming in waters that let me expand? Am I climbing mountains that awaken my strength?
Quotes:
“A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for.” – John A. Shedd
“Don’t limit your challenges. Challenge your limits.” – Jerry Dunn
“Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” – T. S. Eliot
“It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves.” – Edmund Hillary
Closing Wrap-Up
As we close, remember. The climb is not about arriving at some perfect peak. It is about discovering who you are on the journey. With each step you take, each breath you breathe, you conquer not mountains of stone but the heavier mountains of fear, doubt, and self-judgment. Carry your light, your acceptance, your resilience, your gratitude, and your willingness to swim in bigger waters. That is how you keep growing.
